From AS to A2: What Changes in 9709 Pure 3 and How to Prepare

Plenty of students finish Cambridge 9709 AS with a strong grade and then hit Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) like a wall. The content is harder, yes, but the bigger shift is in how you're expected to think.

What Pure 3 actually adds

On top of the Pure 1 foundation, Pure 3 introduces and demands fluency in:

• Advanced algebra: the modulus function, partial fractions, the binomial expansion for any rational $n$.
• Trigonometry: $R\sin(\theta \pm \alpha)$ form, identities, and equation-solving that requires choosing the right identity.
• Calculus that combines: differentiation of products, quotients and implicit relations; integration by substitution and by parts; and first-order differential equations.
• Complex numbers and vectors in three dimensions.
• Numerical methods, including iteration $x_{n+1} = g(x_n)$.

The real change: ambiguity

In AS, a question often tells you which tool to reach for. In Pure 3, a single integral might need partial fractions then a standard result, with no prompt. Consider:

$$\int \frac{3x + 1}{(x+1)(x-2)},dx$$

Nothing tells you to split it. You must recognise that partial fractions unlock it, decompose to $\frac{A}{x+1} + \frac{B}{x-2}$, then integrate to logarithms. AS habits, wait for the signpost, fail here. Pure 3 rewards method selection under ambiguity, layered two or three deep.

How to bridge the gap

1. Re-secure Pure 1 first. Pure 3 silently assumes Pure 1 algebra and calculus are automatic. Any wobble there becomes an invisible blocker.
2. Practise unlabelled questions. Strip the topic heading. Train the reflex of asking "what is this actually testing?" before touching the algebra.
3. Layer deliberately. Seek questions that combine two techniques, substitution inside a differential equation, modulus inside trigonometry, because that combination is the A2 difficulty.
4. Log method-selection errors, not arithmetic ones. "I integrated by parts when substitution was faster" is the mistake class that decides A2 grades.
